COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is a respiratory illness which can be spread person to person. Symptoms include body aches, fever, sneezing, coughing, sore throat, nausea/vomiting.

It is increasingly important to know and understand the risks of coronavirus, not just for you and your family but for the communities we are involved in. We encourage all participants and support workers to be prepared as best as possible to have plans around reducing risks and managing potential changes to the support needs of our community.

The most vulnerable people and those who are at higher risk of becoming seriously are:

  • Older adults

  • People wih serious chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and respiratory diseases

  • People with low immune systems

  • Stay informed

Support Your Way recommends people find the latest information directly from the Australian Government

  • Practice safe hygiene practices

It is critical that everyone ensures they are regularly washing their hands for at least 20 seconds. Ensure you wash your palms, in-between fingers and under your nails. Stay vigilant with your support workers too. This is important for both clients and support workers.

  • Review your current supports

Think about your current supports, what is essential to you and what could be changed. Support Your Way is flexible and adaptable to your needs. If the situation continues to change, think about how your supports could be changed to best suit you and keep you safe. Have a plan ready to go incase support workers are unavailable or if you are required to self-isolate. We can help you plan for this.

  • Plan for illness

Although we hope that this never happens, it is important to plan for any illnesses. In the event that you or your family are unwell, what plan do you have in place? Have you got enough supplies for self-isolation (14 days), do you have a separate room to stay in?

  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing

In times like these, it is important to take care of yourself mentally and emotionally. We understand that there's a lot of stress, confusion out there but we encourage everyone to try and keep calm. Our team is here for a chat too! Get in contact with us if you need extra support.

Consider your risk exposure

Who are you exposed to, and who are they exposed to? We encourage all participants and support workers to take extra precaution when accessing your communities. Ensure you are washing your hands regularly when going out into the community such as supermarkets, using public transport, going to the petrol station etc.

Prepare Yourself

  • Consider whether you or the person you support is at higher risk. We encourage you to suspend any support if yes

  • Ensure you have 2-4 weeks of supplies, including medication, food/drinks and equipment/stock

  • Plan for extended periods of home isolation

  • Communicate with your support workers about your plans and expectations if you, a family member or a support worker is sick

  • Find alternatives to supports, such as online shopping, skype calls with friends/families/doctors

  • Ensure your friends and families understand the risk of you being exposed to COVID-19

Staying connected to your community

  • Take advantage of online capabilities and organise gaming nights or watch parties with your communities. You can join our discord server to chat with your fellow gamers

  • Use Skype or other video appls to chat with friends, family and support workers

  • Consider meal delivery services

  • Use online shopping instead of going out

  • Review your routine to reduce a contact points with support workers

What to do if you’re unwell & Reporting exposure
